VII Alfredo Benítez Conference on the Study of Singing

VII Alfredo Benítez Conference on the Study of Singing at the Expoflamenco Space in Jerez

Statement of reasons:

Among the objectives we set ourselves at the beginning of these study days was always, along with the teaching section, the desire to shed light on some flamenco performers who did not have the recognition they deserved during their lifetime - or after it. Due to different circumstances, they remained in the shadows of their generation despite the fact that their high qualities deserved greater attention from everyone. It was one of the legacies left to us by the maestro Alfredo Benítez, hence these days bear his name to perpetuate his memory and his legacy.

For the study: 'El Gloria de Jerez' on its 130th anniversary:

Beyond the anniversary of this great anniversary, we think that the figure of the singer Rafael Ramos Antúnez 'El Niño Gloria' needs a complete and thorough review. He was born in Jerez de la Frontera on April 27, 1893, and died in Seville on February 11, 1954, the capital where he spent a good part of his artistic life. In the perspective of time, it can be said that he is one of the historical interpreters whose mark persists very clearly today. Especially in the fandangos, festive bulerías and those for listening, villancicos and saetas, as well as other recordings that we have.

As a training workshop and with the aim of shedding light on the work and figure of El Gloria de Jerez, we are going to bring together a large group of specialists, historians and artists around his figure, and also in memory of the maestro Alfredo Benítez Valle, the driving force behind these events in their origins and from this year onwards they will bear his name.
