Synopsis

Profusely illustrated and based on literary works and prints from the National Library of Spain, the book takes us on a journey that begins with the first pre-flamenco manifestations that we find in works such as La Gitanilla by Cervantes or in prints such as El Vito by Goya. When in the 18th century Estébanez Calderón describes Un baile en Triana and Asamblea General in his Escenas Andaluzas, flamenco was already a fact recognisable by a good part of society and newspaper clippings speak of the legendary Silverio Franconetti. Travellers who came to Spain – such as Richard Ford or Davillier – passionately displayed this new form of expression and even Antonio Machado y Álvarez, Demófilo , wrote the first pages of flamencology with his essays and compilations. At the end of the 19th century, photography was another of the disciplines that was attracted to flamenco culture. From this same fascination was born the representation of flamenco in painting: Lameyer, Fortuny or Tapies. A theme that more recently illustrators such as Luis Gordillo or Ceesepe did for records and posters.
