Synopsis

This book focuses on the lyrics of flamenco singing as literary texts. His proposal is that a flamenco couplet does not have a fixed meaning, but that it is the particular combination of different couplets in their specific context that generates the oral poems of cante. In flamenco, texts from various sources are sung that can be either fragments of other traditional manifestations or texts composed by authors. Despite multiple ancient texts being recited, the creation of new letters has always been, and continues to be, an important additional source. The singers have certain repertoires of texts from the collective heritage and usually recite them from memory, which is crucially relevant in flamenco. In this research, most of the corpus of texts comes from flamenco recitals that the author has attended live. Due to the fact that different short stanzas are usually linked together in a compositional unit that is composed according to musical aspects, the lyrics of a cante appear in its specific execution. These ephemeral poems, like open networks of intertexts, bring together the semantic values ​​of the different textual fragments and give rise to multiple possible meanings. Thus, with respect to current flamenco lyrics, one can still speak of a specific type of traditional, dynamic and lively oral poetry, although its transmission is carried out to a great extent in a mediatized manner.
