Synopsis
This study is seen from a new theoretical framework for flamencology, such as the historiographic and critical analysis of the conceptualizations of race. How does flamenco dance blackness? Or, How is the construction of race deployed in the Atlantic world within flamenco dance? The book is divided into two parts. The first focuses on the arrival of blackness in Spanish dance and music through the fandangos indianos. The second addresses three key elements in the history of flamenco: The work "El tío Caniyitas", the figure of the black Meric, protagonist of one of the first flamenco films in history, and the blackness of the body of Juana Vargas La Macarrona.
Book awarded the Barnard Hewitt Prize by the American Society for Theatre Research in 2020.
